South Africa, April 2026: More Than a Trip — It Was a Homecoming

Our Hosted Group Journey: Johannesburg → Pilanesberg National Park → Cape Town
By Rekena Davis | Founder & Host, J Marie Travel Agency | April 2026 Hosted Journey- South Africa Collection

If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to have Africa welcome you home, let me tell you about April.

April is autumn in South Africa. The light turns soft and golden. The summer crowds have thinned, the air is crisp in Cape Town, and the bush… oh the bush, is still lush and green from summer rains, but perfect for incredible game viewing.  The lines are shorter, and the beauty is just… unhurried.

This April 2026, I had the honor of hosting a beautiful group of travelers, some friends, some solo travelers who came alone and left with family, on a journey that started in Johannesburg, honored Mandela’s legacy, headed into the wild at Pilanesberg National Park, and finished with our hearts full in Cape Town.

We didn’t just see South Africa. We felt it.

This is our story.

Johannesburg — Honoring Mandela’s Legacy

We started in Johannesburg, because I believe you must start where the story is deepest. Joburg holds you accountable in the best way. It asks you to listen. On our first morning together, we stood in front of a wall that said, ‘Honour Madiba’s legacy — Make your mark on Mandela Day.’

Johannesburg — in front of the Mandela Day wall. Twenty-three of us, standing where courage once stood.

Standing in front of the banner that read ‘Honour Madiba’s legacy — Make your mark on Mandela Day,’ you could feel it. For us, this moment was not just historical. It was personal. It was a homecoming. We were standing where courage changed a country. It was a reminder that resilience has a long memory, and it travels across oceans.

We spent time in Soweto, walked Vilakazi Street, and sat with stories at the Apartheid Museum that don’t let you look away. And I’m grateful we did. It set the tone for everything that followed.

Into the Wild — Safari at Pilanesberg National Park

From the city, we journeyed to the bush.

I chose Pilanesberg intentionally. It’s malaria-free, which gives everyone peace of mind. It sits inside an ancient, extinct volcanic crater, and home to the Big 5. The open grasslands and golden winter light in April made for perfect morning and evening game drives.

There is nothing like the laughter in the truck when an elephant crosses the road right in front of you.  Or when everyone whispers ‘look, look, look’ at the same time.  Pilanesberg delivered. We watched, we listened to our incredible safari guides, and we shared those quiet, wide-eyed moments that only happen when you are fully present in the wild.

History That Moves You — Robben Island

In Cape Town, history came full circle. We boarded the ferry to Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The blue frame that says ‘Robben Island Museum • World Heritage Site’ with Table Mountain rising behind us — that image will stay with us forever.

Robben Island Museum, World Heritage Site — with Table Mountain watching over us. A sacred, unforgettable day.

Standing in the place where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years hits differently. It was not just a tour. It was a pilgrimage. Our guide, who was formerly imprisoned on the island himself, told the story with grace and truth.   We didn’t rush. We listened.  It wasn’t performative, it was reverent.  We left changed.

Cape Town & The Cape Peninsula — The Grand Finale

Cape Town is beautiful. Table Mountain, the winding coastal road to the Cape of Good Hope, the penguins at Boulders Beach, and the Winelands.  April gave us crisp, clear days and that soft autumn light photographers dream about.

That moment at the Cape of Good Hope sign, where we took photos in our custom South Africa 2026 shirts, deep burgundy, with the continent in gold, says everything about my hosted group journey’s. You have people to laugh with, to take the photo, to say ‘Can you believe we are HERE?’

Culture & Connection — Our Farewell Dinner in Cape Town

On our last night in Cape Town, we dressed up for our farewell dinner. It was elegant, joyful, and full of love.

Our farewell dinner in Cape Town — the ladies and gentlemen dressed in beautiful African attire.

The gentlemen walked into the lobby in beautiful African attire.  Embroidered tunics, rich kente, bold prints… The ladies followed in vibrant dresses that looked like joy itself.  Ankara, bold patterns, colors that made the whole room light up.  We shared memories from Johannesburg, to Pilanesberg, to the Cape. We toasted to new friendships and to the continent that welcomed us home.  That’s what hosted travel does. It gives you space to be cared for, so you can actually be present.

Why I Host

People ask me why I host groups instead of just booking trips.

It’s this: I love the moment when a solo traveler who was nervous at the welcome dinner is now dancing at the farewell. I love handling all the little things, the transfers, the tickets, the ‘don’t worry, I’ve got it’, so you can focus on the big things, like how it feels to stand at the edge of a continent with people who get you.

This group reminded me of my purpose for starting Hosted Journeys by J Marie Travel Agency in the first place. For connection. For ease. For journeys that leave you softer, not just more stamped.
